By  |

In a brand new interview with Rolling Stone, ex One Direction star Harry Styles opens up and reflects on the past year of his solo career, and his time in his famed boy band, One Direction, who announced an indefinite hiatus following his departure.

During the interview, Rolling Stone asks Harry Styles about his primarily younger fan base.

Styles replies, “Who’s to say that young girls who like pop music – short for popular, right? – have worse musical taste than a 30 year old hipster guy?”

The interview read as, “Styles is aware that his largest audience so far has been young – often teenage – women. Asked if he spends pressure-filled evenings worried about proving credibility to an older crowd, Styles grows animated. “Who’s to say that young girls who like pop music – short for popular, right? – have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy? That’s not up to you to say. Music is something that’s always changing. There’s no goal posts. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they’re not serious? How can you say young girls don’t get it? They’re our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going. Teenage-girl fans – they don’t lie. If they like you, they’re there. They don’t act ‘too cool.’ They like you, and they tell you. Which is sick.

A twitter user by the name of Katherine Speller read the interview and posted a screenshot to her personal Twitter page, stating “My kink is Harry Styles respecting teen girls and their pure unironic enjoyment of things, thank you.”

Following the tweet, Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low joined in on the discussion, replying “He nailed it.”

Gaskarth later went into more detail regarding his support of Style’ words, saying “Been asked questions like this before. Do we worry that some of our fanbase is young, etc. As if it carries some kind of negative connotation.”

Issues’ Skyer Acord and You Me At Six’s Josh Franceschi also joined hte discussion, responding to Gaskarth with “Idg why the other fans of an artist dictate to so many people wether or not they should enjoy them. Music is tight! Enjoying music is tight!” and “Really nailed it.”
