By  |

In honor of today being International Women’s Day, We would like to highlight a several women within our scene who deserve to be in the spotlight as we celebrate kicka** women today! When I think of women within our scene who kicka** I immediately think several including LZZY Hale (Halestorm), Jenna McDougall (Tonight Alive), Korey Cooper & Jen (Skillet), Tay Jardine (We Are The In Crowd), Jess Bowen (The Summer Set), Katie Cole (Dangerkids), Dorothy (Dorothy), Bebe Rexha (Bebe Rexha), Juliet Simms (Juliet Simms), LIGHTS (LIGHTS), Lynn Gunn (PVRIS), Halsey (Halsey), Chrissy Costanza (Against The Current), Hayley Williams (Paramore), Ash Costello (New Year’s Day), and SU-METAL, YUIMETAL, MOAMETAL (Baby Metal).

LZZY HALE of Halestorm is definitley a woman within our scene who deserves to be recognized as her vocals are exceptionally powerful and really impact you when you hear them. You know her vocals when you hear them and she can use them in many of different genres including Country where she has a been in a duet with Eric Church singing “That’s Damn Rock n Roll

,” Screaming on a Machine Gun Kelly’s track featuring her titled “Spotlight,” also heard on Lindsey Stirling’s “Shatter Me,” and has also performed cover songs live with acts such as Seether, Lita Ford, Jim Bruer, Dorothy, Tom Keifer, Shinedown, and many more. LZZY HALE’s voice has become a signature sound that definitley defies many of others and is a staple within the rock radio community.

Jenna McDougall of Tonight Alive is another honorable woman, who is an incredible inspiration to many young woman in the world as she is a staple in the female rights advocacy movement. She stands to make a difference and is the voice for many young woman who cannot speak for themselves. Her voice is not only heard by many within her advocacy but also shines bright within many of her songs where she speaks on topics that many of young men and woman can relate to within her lyrics. Jenna has been a staple in the Warped Tour community since Tonight Alive’s debut to the scene in 2008. McDougall also fights everyday for the LGBTQ community as she is out to make a difference through her music and with her voice being heard by the thousands of fans at each of Tonight Alive’s shows.

Bebe Rexha is the next woman I would like to mention that dominates the music scene. I’ve seen her climb from Vans Warped Tour to the tops of the Billboard charts, not only with songs she has written for major artists but also her own tracks, both of which climbed the Billboard charts rapidly. Her debut album All Your Fault was recently released with the hit single “I Got You” which climbed the Billboard charts immediately after being released. Bebe Rexha is currently out on her solo headlining tour which is the first headlining tour that she has ever done, and its nearly 100% sold out and venues are upgrading to larger ones to accompany fans.

Lynn Gunn of PVRIS has become a very vocal and prominent figure in the scene with a huge push for LGBTQ rights and equality for women. The band has even announced a free show at SXSW to benefit Planned Parenthood later this month. No one since Haley Williams has garnered so much support and role model status or girls as fast and as massive as Lynn has over the course of a few years leaving her with a loyal following.

Korey Cooper and Jen Ledger of SKILLET are a badass rock powerhouse. Korey, married to frontman John Cooper, has been in the band since it’s inception in the late 90s while Jen is a fresh faced member in terms of the band’s existence. Despite her being the newest and youngest member, the band has always been by definition an equal sex band. John and Korey have been the main names showcased but they’ve always had a female drummer and male guitarist. The band has skyrocketed out of the Christian markets into the mainstream allowing the ladies to be an example to many young girls throw up their devil horns.

Jess Bowen of The Summer Set, Despite it’s openness and acceptance, the music scene has seen very few artists come out over the years. Some from recent memory are Tyler Carter of Issues as bi-sexual, and Lynn of PVRIS as lesbian. Before them though, Jess Bowen released a massive tell all in 2015 about coming to grips with her sexuality. Imagine being in a male dominated industry while adding being a lesbian to that can make you feel even more isolated and alone than before. Lucky for her, she was welcomed with open arms and disappointed many fellows as her sweetheart charm while being a musician had a lot of dudes crushing.

Juliet Simms, Let’s just call her the ultimate ‘Scene Queen’. Married to one of the most popular singers in the scene, Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides, Simms has risen to stardom. Lets not give him all the credit thought. Simms rose to prominence with her first band Automatic Loveletter and after disbanding in 2011 she became a star after being on the hit singing competition called ‘The Voice’ finishing runner up. She has released two EP’s (All or Nothing and From The Grave) since the show and has done a run on the Vans Warped Tour. From 2005-2016 she has lent her voice on many guest spots with bands such as All Time Low, Secondhand Serenade, Andy Black, 3OH!3, the list goes on…

Lights: Valerie Anne Poxleitner her former real name, has been doing many things in the underground electronic pop scene. She started back when Myspace was the place to go if you wanted to put out your music in an easy accessible way and since then has gathered up quite the following. She also managed to gather up Beau Bokan of Blessthefall and the two are married with a child. She has done many guest spots crossing over the genre lines for Bring Me The Horizon, Owl City, and Blessthefall in which her and her husband did a duet together.

Chrissy Constanza: You may not know her name now but you will soon. Her band Against The Current have racked up a huge social media cult following after doing various covers on youtube even collaborating with other youtube artists. They have also been out on the Vans Warped Tour also showcasing their brand of electronic pop rock. Her voice and style has the ability to carry the band far into the mainstream as I have been dubbing them the next Echosmith for a year or so now. It’ll happen…

Halsey: The sultry sweetheart from NY is a big name with a small presence in comparison. Think about it, you see her name and music everywhere but yet her name is only a whisper on the airwaves. She has a following that’s dedicated and loyal, so dedicated she invited 100 of them last year to hear 4 new songs off her forthcoming record, some were moved to tears. The future is only brighter and brighter for this young star who had her debut record, ‘Badlands’, hit #2 on the Billboard 200.

Tay Jardine, Former singer of We Are The In Crowd which was a highly successful band before their departure from the music industry. Tay is a feminist and very well spoken for female advocacy and speaks on behalf of many of young girls following her to this day. Jardine is very entertaining live and her voice is a force to be reckoned with.

Katie Cole of DANGERKIDS is one of the best female drummers out there right now. Her unique stage presence makes for a wonderful show of blonde/brown hair swinging around faster then Beyonce’ hair while its blowing from her on stage hair blowing fans. Not to mention very heavy hitting on her SJC Drum kit, which she proudly represents. Katie Cole really shines within Dangerkids latest album, Blacklist_. Blacklist_ was a hugely successful album release for DANGERKIDS. Check it out for sure.

Hayley Williams has been the standard for the females in the music scene. Starting off playing parking lots on Warped Tour now has her band, Paramore, way too big to even play the festival which gave them humble beginnings. She has busted through the fairly recent and still existent glass ceiling in the music industry towards females. She has a very long relationship with Chad Gilbert of Pop Punk icons New Found Glory. I think the coolest thing to happen to her in her career was before many knew her, she had a guest spot on a song by one of the most influential hardcore/metalcore bands ever, The Chariot.

One of the more polarizing figures in rock is Ash Costello of New Years Day. Her dark gothic style and vibrant red hair causes her to stick out amongst her peers. She may look all modeled up and poised, but she works harder than your dad probably does. The band New Years Day hustled on their Warped Tour trek building their fan base on the road in the hot sun. Selling CDs, holding set signs, meeting fans warranted to attention of Kevin Lyman who took notice. He dubbed them the hardest working band on the entire tour. Now, they are a road heavy band touring nonstop even until recently when Ash had to have emergency foot surgery and drop off their tour with Attila. She is talented, hard working, and tough spirited. What more could you want from a female role model?

BabyMetal: This is one of those bands you ask yourself WTF is going on? They have played countless festivals after coming to America from Japan with their brand of pop/dance metal. Their reputation can be good or bad depending who you ask, but it’s clear they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon except on a new tour with Korn. The stars of the band are the two co vocalists putting on an epic show of dancing and various theatrics while circle head banging is going on with the musicians. It is certainly a thing to see for yourself live.

Dorothy, is a badas* woman in the music industry just raising a little bit of hell. Signed to RocNation, and having the vocal range that only a rock goddess could have. Dorothy is known for her seductive attire, and her incredible voice and talent. Check her out if you have not yet done so. You have been missing out!
